Coming home tired and discovering a strange object near your bed can be unsettling. Here are some common possibilities and what to check before assuming the worst.
After a long day at work, the last thing anyone expects is to walk into their bedroom and discover something strange sitting near the bed.
At first, the object may look frightening simply because you don’t recognize it. In low evening light, an unfamiliar insect, piece of debris, shed material, or household object can easily look much more mysterious than it really is.
Before touching it, take a moment to look closely.
What Could It Be?
The exact identification depends on what the object actually looks like. Things commonly found around beds can include:
- A shed insect or insect casing
- A spider or spider molt
- A small piece of plant material
- Lint or fibers
- A seed or dried leaf fragment
- A household item that has fallen or been moved
- In some cases, an actual household pest
If it appears to be an insect, don’t crush or handle it with your bare hands. Take a clear close-up photograph from several angles first. Details such as legs, body shape, wings, antennae, size, and color can make identification much easier.
Don’t Panic
Finding an unfamiliar object near your bed doesn’t automatically mean your home has an infestation or that something dangerous was present.
If you find several similar insects, shed skins, tiny dark spots, eggs, or other unusual material around the mattress and bed frame, however, it is worth investigating the area carefully.
Check the mattress seams, bed frame, headboard, nearby furniture, and cracks around the room.
What Would You Do?
Would you immediately pick it up, or would you grab your phone and take a picture first?
