My Nana Showed Me This Trick to Make Dusty Blinds Shine in 2 Minutes With Almost 0 Work
Dusty blinds can make an entire room look untidy, even when everything else is clean. The frustrating part is that cleaning every individual slat can feel like a tedious chore.
My nana had a simple trick that made the job much faster—and it doesn’t require expensive cleaning products.
The Simple Trick
The secret is to use a clean microfiber cloth and a little diluted dish soap.
Microfiber works particularly well because it traps dust instead of simply pushing it from one surface to another.
What you’ll need
- 1 clean microfiber cloth
- A bowl of warm water
- A few drops of mild dish soap
- A dry microfiber cloth
Step 1: Close the blinds
Close the blinds so the slats are positioned in the same direction. This gives you a larger, flatter surface to work across.
Step 2: Make a gentle cleaning solution
Add a few drops of mild dish soap to warm water. You don’t need a lot of soap—too much can leave a residue behind.
Dip the microfiber cloth into the solution and wring it out thoroughly. It should be damp, not dripping wet.
Step 3: Wipe the slats
Run the damp microfiber cloth gently across the slats, working from one side to the other.
For heavily dusty blinds, first use a dry microfiber cloth or vacuum with a soft brush attachment to remove loose dust. This prevents dusty residue from turning into muddy streaks.
Step 4: Give them a quick dry
Use a second dry microfiber cloth to remove remaining moisture and prevent water spots.
That’s it.
An Even Easier Dusting Hack
If your blinds aren’t particularly dirty and only need dust removal, you may not need water at all.
Put a clean microfiber cloth around your hand and gently wipe several slats at once. You can also use a clean sock over your hand for a quick dusting tool.
For deeper cleaning, however, microfiber is generally a better choice because it captures fine dust effectively.
Be Careful With Different Blind Materials
Not every blind should be soaked with water.
Wood blinds: Use very little moisture and avoid leaving water sitting on the surface.
Faux wood or vinyl blinds: These are generally more tolerant of gentle damp cleaning.
Fabric blinds: Check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions before using water or soap.
Aluminum blinds: A lightly damp microfiber cloth usually works well, but avoid excessive pressure that could bend the slats.
The Nana-approved routine
The trick isn’t really about a magical cleaning ingredient. It’s about using the right cloth, very little moisture, and cleaning the slats systematically.
A quick dusting once a week can also prevent the buildup from becoming a much bigger cleaning job later.
So the next time your blinds look dull and dusty, skip the complicated cleaning routine. Grab a microfiber cloth, use a little warm soapy water when appropriate, and give those slats a quick wipe. Your room can look noticeably fresher in just a few minutes.
