An enlarged prostate is common with aging, but certain lifestyle habits may increase the risk or worsen urinary symptoms. Learn which habits to avoid and what you can do to support prostate and urinary health.
The claim that one specific habit directly enlarges the prostate is misleading. Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is mainly associated with aging and hormonal changes, and researchers have not identified one particular daily habit that causes the prostate to enlarge.
However, some habits and lifestyle factors can increase the likelihood of BPH or make its symptoms worse.
1. Sitting Too Much and Avoiding Exercise
Physical inactivity is associated with a greater likelihood of BPH, while regular physical activity may help reduce the risk and improve urinary symptoms.
Try taking regular walking breaks and getting consistent moderate exercise.
2. Drinking Lots of Caffeine or Alcohol
Coffee, tea, energy drinks and alcohol don’t necessarily make the prostate physically larger, but they can increase urination and aggravate urinary symptoms such as urgency and frequent nighttime bathroom trips.
If you already have BPH symptoms, reducing these drinks—especially later in the day—may help.
3. Gaining Excess Weight
Obesity is associated with an increased risk of BPH. Maintaining a healthy weight and staying physically active may help reduce urinary problems.
4. Frequently Holding Your Urine
Holding urine for long periods isn’t known to enlarge the prostate, but it can contribute to bladder problems and may make urinary symptoms harder to manage. NIDDK recommends using the bathroom when you need to go rather than routinely holding it.
5. Ignoring Worsening Urinary Symptoms
Frequent nighttime urination, a weak or interrupted stream, difficulty starting urination, dribbling, urgency, or feeling that your bladder hasn’t emptied completely can occur with BPH.
Don’t automatically assume these symptoms are simply “part of getting older.” Other urinary conditions can produce similar symptoms and should be evaluated.
The Bottom Line
There is no single habit proven to enlarge the prostate. Aging is the major factor, while family history, obesity, diabetes, heart disease and physical inactivity can also increase risk.
For better prostate and urinary health, focus on regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, moderating caffeine and alcohol, and getting medical advice when urinary symptoms appear.
Seek urgent medical attention if you suddenly cannot urinate at all, because acute urinary retention can be serious.
