Mothered Hamburger Steaks are tender, seasoned ground-beef patties smothered in rich onion gravy. Here’s a classic homestyle version:
Mothered Hamburger Steaks
Ingredients
- 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp paprika
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 2 tbsp oil
For the gravy
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Make the patties: Mix ground beef, chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Form into 4–5 oval patties.
- Brown the steaks: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the patties for about 3–4 minutes per side until nicely browned. Remove and set aside.
- Cook the onions: In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions. Cook until soft and golden, about 5–7 minutes.
- Make the gravy: Sprinkle flour over the onions and stir for 1 minute. Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
- Smother: Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15–20 minutes, turning the patties once, until cooked through and the gravy is thick and flavorful.
- Serve: Spoon plenty of onion gravy over the hamburger steaks. They’re especially good with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttery green beans.
Tip: Don’t press down on the patties while they cook—the juices stay inside and keep the hamburger steaks tender.
