Learn how to use baking soda safely to help loosen grease and oily residue from kitchen surfaces, cookware, stovetops, and other household areas.
Baking soda is a simple household ingredient that can be useful for tackling light to moderate grease and oily residue. Its mildly abrasive texture can help lift grime, while combining it with water creates a gentle cleaning paste.
1. Greasy Stovetops
Mix baking soda with a small amount of water until you have a thick paste. Spread it over cooled, greasy areas and let it sit for about 10–15 minutes. Wipe gently with a damp cloth or sponge.
2. Kitchen Cabinets
For greasy cabinet surfaces, especially around the stove, use a small amount of baking soda mixed with warm water. Test the mixture on an inconspicuous area first, particularly on painted or delicate finishes.
3. Pots and Pans
Sprinkle baking soda over the greasy surface, add a little warm water, and allow it to sit. Then scrub gently with a suitable sponge.
For stubborn grease, dish soap is usually more effective when combined with warm water.
4. Range Hood and Filter Areas
Baking soda can help loosen surface grime around a range hood. For removable filters, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions because some filters should not be soaked or treated with abrasive products.
5. Greasy Kitchen Sinks
Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda into a damp sink and gently scrub with a sponge. Rinse thoroughly afterward.
The Simple Baking Soda Paste
For many household surfaces, try:
- 3 tablespoons baking soda
- 1 tablespoon water
Mix until it forms a spreadable paste. Apply it to the greasy area, allow it to sit briefly, then wipe and rinse.
Important Precautions
Baking soda isn’t suitable for every surface. Avoid aggressive scrubbing on delicate stone, polished surfaces, nonstick coatings, or easily scratched finishes. Never mix baking soda with bleach or other cleaning chemicals.
And remember: for heavy grease, dishwashing detergent or a dedicated degreaser may work better than baking soda alone.
