My wife noticed the blinking light first.
At the time, I didn’t think much of it. We had just arrived at the Airbnb, dropped our bags, and were trying to settle in after a long trip. Everything looked normal.
Then she pointed toward the ceiling.
“Is that supposed to blink like that?”
I looked up at the smoke detector.
A small light was flashing.
I told her it was probably normal. Smoke detectors have lights, after all. But something about the way she was looking at it made me take a second look.
I walked over and examined the detector more closely.
That’s when I noticed something strange.
Something Didn’t Look Right
The smoke detector appeared slightly different from the ones I’d seen before.
There was a tiny opening in an unusual place.
I started wondering whether the device was actually what it claimed to be.
So, against my better judgment, I unscrewed it from the ceiling.
What I found behind it made my stomach drop.
There was a small camera hidden inside.
For a few seconds, neither of us said anything.
We just stared at it.
Our first thought was that we needed to get out.
We Packed Everything and Left
We didn’t stop to investigate further.
We grabbed our belongings, checked the room as quickly as we could, and left the property.
The entire situation felt surreal.
We had rented the place expecting privacy. Instead, we had discovered what appeared to be a hidden recording device disguised as a household safety device.
Once we were somewhere safe, I decided to document what had happened.
I took photos of the device and kept the information connected to the booking.
Then I wrote a review warning future guests about what we’d found.
I didn’t want another person to walk into that property without knowing what had happened to us.
Then Came the Reply
A few minutes after I posted the review, I received a response.
I expected the host to deny everything.
Instead, the message was bizarre.
It said:
“You fool, this is…”
And then the message continued with words that made absolutely no sense.
I read it again.
Then again.
My wife looked over my shoulder.
Neither of us understood what the host was trying to say.
But one thing was immediately clear:
The response made the entire situation even more disturbing.
We Started Asking Questions
Why was there a camera inside the smoke detector?
Was it actually recording?
Who had access to it?
Had previous guests been recorded?
And most importantly, how long had it been there?
Those were questions we couldn’t answer ourselves.
At that point, we decided that the incident needed to be reported rather than treated as just another bad Airbnb experience.
What We Learned
Discovering a suspected hidden camera in a rental property is not something a guest should have to deal with.
If you ever notice something unusual in a vacation rental, don’t immediately assume the worst—but don’t ignore your instincts either.
Pay attention to unfamiliar devices, unusual objects, or anything that appears to have been modified.
If you suspect a privacy violation, document what you can without putting yourself at further risk and contact the appropriate platform and local authorities.
The Review Wasn’t About Revenge
Some people might think leaving a negative review was an overreaction.
For us, it wasn’t about revenge.
It was about warning other travelers.
A rental property is supposed to provide a reasonable expectation of privacy. If a guest discovers a suspected recording device, that’s a serious matter that deserves proper investigation.
We didn’t know what had happened before we arrived.
We didn’t know whether anyone else had been recorded.
And we didn’t know what would have happened if my wife hadn’t noticed that blinking light.
That’s the part that still bothers me.
The Blinking Light Changed Everything
Looking back, the strangest part is how ordinary everything seemed when we first walked through the door.
A normal room.
A normal ceiling.
A normal smoke detector.
Until one tiny blinking light caught my wife’s attention.
Sometimes it’s the smallest detail that changes everything.
We left that Airbnb in a hurry.
But I still think about that smoke detector—and how easily we could have ignored it.
If my wife hadn’t looked up, we might never have known.
