Think you can count the holes in this T-shirt? Take this tricky visual puzzle and see if you can find every opening before checking the answer.
At first glance, this looks like a simple question.
How many holes does the T-shirt have?
Most people immediately count the obvious openings—the neck, sleeves, and bottom—and think they have the answer.
But this puzzle is designed to make you look twice.
Take a Moment Before Answering
Look carefully at the entire T-shirt.
Don’t just count the normal openings. Pay attention to any tears, cuts, or holes through the fabric.
The tricky part is that some holes may be visible from both the front and the back.
That means you need to think about whether you’re counting:
- The normal openings of the shirt
- Additional tears in the fabric
- Openings that go completely through both sides
- Each visible opening separately
The Answer
If the shirt in the puzzle has the usual four openings—the neck, two sleeves, and bottom—and also contains two additional holes that go through both the front and back, the total is commonly counted as:
8 HOLES
Why?
The normal shirt has:
- 1 neck opening
- 2 sleeve openings
- 1 bottom opening
That’s 4.
If there are two tears that pass through both the front and back layers, each tear creates 2 openings, adding another 4.
4 + 4 = 8 holes.
Why Is This Puzzle So Tricky?
The puzzle tests whether you automatically count what you see or stop to consider the structure of the object.
A quick glance can make the answer seem obvious, but once you consider holes that pass through multiple layers of fabric, the number changes.
That’s why these puzzles are so popular: the answer isn’t necessarily difficult—the challenge is noticing the detail everyone else overlooks.
Did You Get It Right?
Don’t feel bad if you didn’t.
These visual puzzles are designed to encourage quick assumptions. The best strategy is to slow down, examine every part of the object, and ask yourself whether a visible opening continues through another layer.
So, how many holes did you count before reading the answer?
